According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees’ report “Too Much Pain” (2018), 66,000 women and girls coming from FGM-practising countries applied for asylum in Europe and over 24,000 of them could potentially have already been affected by FGM. UNHCR also estimates that over 600,000 women are living with the consequences of FGM in Europe and that a further 180,000 girls and women are at risk of undergoing the harmful practice in 13 European countries.

2 April 2024Project “IAPHP – Intercultural Approach to Prevent Harmful Practices”
The general objective of the project is to provide cross-cultural training, online and face-to-face, on the prevention of harmful practices (HP) for frontline practitioners and raising awareness and informing migrant, refugee and asylum seeker women about harmful practices, in order to
- Identifying and preventing harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation, forced and early marriages and honour crimes
- Ensuring prompt and adequate support for migrant women – young and adult – at risk of being subjected to harmful traditional practices
ISMU’s core activity is focused on the development of an intercultural digital toolbox to prevent HP on migrant women, with a Reference Framework for Intercultural Dialogue (WP2).
- Professionals competent in tackling harmful practices in intercultural contexts, including legal and psychological support.
- Knowledgeable migrant women in identifying and preventing harmful practices, including how to legally report them.
